What the GMC Wants You to Know About Cosmetic Surgery

Posted on 12 July 2016
In June 2016, the General Medical Council (GMC) issued strict new guidelines to doctors across the UK to help ensure they provide the best possible care for their patients. The GMC has simultaneously released new advice for prospective cosmetic surgery patients.

The explanatory guidance (entitled “Cosmetic Procedures: What Do I Need to Consider?”) covers a number of things patients ought to take into consideration before deciding to go under the knife. The Council has also asked private clinics to display a supporting poster, which lists eight key points.

If you’re considering either a surgical or non-surgical procedure, we strongly recommend that you firstly read the GMC’s new guide and/or poster as it will help you prepare for your initial consultation, know what to expect after your procedure, and what to do if you’re unhappy with the treatment you receive from your surgeon.

What makes the GMC poster so memorable is that it spells out the word COSMETIC as we’ve demonstrated below:

C = Consent – the doctor carrying out your chosen procedure must speak with you personally and obtain your consent;
O = Openness – your doctor must be open and honest at all times;
S = Safety – procedures must be performed in a suitable, safe environment;
M = Marketing - your doctor must advertise/market their services ethically and responsibly, and be clear about any associated risks;
E = Experience – your doctor should have sufficient experience of performing your chosen procedure;
T = Time - your doctor must never rush or pressure you into deciding to undergo a procedure;
I = Information – you must be given clear information about the procedure, as well as aftercare, and details of who to contact if you are concerned;
C = Costs – your doctor must be clear about the costs, and let you know if extra fees will be incurred if you potentially need any additional procedures.

If you’d like further information on how to go about finding a suitably experienced and qualified cosmetic surgeon, what the various non-surgical and surgical procedures available entail, and why choosing a cosmetic surgery like Liberate that offers its patients a lifetime of aftercare is so important, you’ll find all this and more on our website.
