Cosmetic Surgery - What Exactly Are You Paying For?

Posted on 23 August 2016
As aesthetic cosmetic surgery is rarely provided on the NHS these days, a large proportion of patients fund their chosen procedures privately. This means that you often pay for an initial consultation with a surgeon and, if you decide to go ahead, you’ll then be given a final invoice for the cost of the operation/treatment.

If you’ve never researched the cost of common cosmetic surgery procedures, the price guides can come as a bit of a shock. On the other hand, you may have already done some homework on the internet, and are confused as to why Surgeon A is charging £4,000 and Surgeon B is only charging £3,000, not to mention why Surgeon C (who only operates in Thailand) is willing to perform the work at a fraction of both these figures.

The price of different surgeries can vary significantly. Invasive procedures such as tummy tucks, nose jobs, breast enhancements, and face lifts cost more than non-surgical procedures like skin peels, Botox injections, and laser hair removal due to the extra time and aftercare involved, as well as the anaesthesia costs.

With invasive operations, you’ll typically be paying towards the cost of your surgeon and his team, hiring an operating room, aftercare and your hospital stay, drugs (such as painkillers) and anaesthesia, and pre and post-operative tests such as X-rays.

Different surgeons also command varying fees, and while the most expensive doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the best person for the job (N.B., it’s always best to look for a fully-qualified, highly-experienced specialist in your chosen treatment who is a member of either BAPRAS and/or BAAPS), the very cheapest should certainly raise a red flag.

Naturally, many people hone in on the lowest advertised prices, but in the majority of cases, surgeons, clinics, and beauty salons offering unbelievably low rates should be avoided. Travelling abroad for cheaper surgery is also risky as procedures are often carried out by poorly trained individuals in unregulated and unhygienic environments. And, you are likely to need to pay for specialist travel insurance to cover you in the event of problems. Plus, if things do go wrong once you’ve returned home, it can cause additional stress and time off work if you have to fly back for remedial work to be carried out.

On the Liberate website, you can view approximate prices of common procedures, meet our team of UK-based surgeons who are all highly accredited and experienced, and arrange a consultation with a surgeon of your choosing.
